The Theodore Salvesen Memorial Trust is a grant giving charity registered in Scotland as charity number SC008336. The Trust was created by Captain Harold K Salvesen, Master of Arts (Oxon), Master of Arts (Harvard) of Inveralmond, Cramond, Edinburgh, a Shipowner in Leith and others, by Declaration of Trust dated 30 October 1942 and registered 27 November 1942.

The main objective of the Trust continues to be:

“The promotion of the welfare, dignity and efficiency of members
and intending members of the British Merchant Navy.”

It is the intention of the Trustees to give grants where financial hardship/difficulty is experienced but not to bodies whose finances are normally met from public monies, except in exceptional circumstances. Grants to individuals tend to range from a few hundred to a thousand pounds and charitable donations tend to exceed this. In the last financial year the Trust gave just under £30,000, which supported sixteen individuals who studied for a career in the merchant navy and three charities that offer assistance to retired members of the British Merchant Navy.

Applications for financial assistance require to comply with the intentions of the Trust and any decision made by the Trustees is final. Individuals wishing to apply for a grant can do so at any stage and can expect a decision within one to two months. Charitable donations are made once a year in the Autumn.

Further information or clarification may be obtained from The Secretary of the Trust or you can download an application form and send it in.
